WEK set for triple-bill

Posted on 11 June 2009 by Martin-Gwyn Williams

Rehearsals are almost over for the triple-bill of performances this month – firstly a 1hr performance for the Dreamflight Charity on Saturday 20th June, then a performance at this year’s West End Live (12.35pm) on Sunday 21st June and finally at the MADD Festival in Waddesdon on Sunday 28th June. It has been a very frantic 6 or 7 weeks.

Everyone (staff and WEKs alike) have worked tirelessly over the last 6 weeks to put together 1hrs worth of new material in preparation for Dreamflight. 1hr of chorus material is a lot! Way more than the amount of chorus material you might find in a book musical or West End show. Couple this with the standards we require of all West End Kids, and even the most experienced and talented WEKs have really had to dig deep in order to get ready for the performance.

There is also the challenge of fitness. It should not be underestimated how physically fit you have to be to get on stage (under the heat of lights) and sing & dance for one solid hour. To demonstrate to those who don’t perform, I can only liken it to running flat out for 1hr whilst also only allowing yourself to breath in and out over a 4 second count (breath control required to sing). It really has been an incredible adventure in getting all of the material together.

At Dreamflight, WEK will perform – A Broadway Medley, The Way You Where Your Hat, 60’s Medley, Jekyll & Hyde Medley, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Dancing Fool, Rhythm of Life, Seussical Medley, The Best of Times, Bridge Over Troubled Water and the official Dreamflight song, “One Dream Away”. I’m sure even the most hardened of theatre directors or performers will admit that to put that lot together, with a running order of 57 minutes is an awesome achievement for all the WEK’s in just 6 weeks (or 6 days) of rehearsal.

We will perform a much shorter set at West End Live, (Broadway Medley and Seussical Medley) and at MADD, the WEKs will take to the stage to do Broadway Medley, 60’s Medley, Seussical Medley and Thoroughly Modern Millie (running time 20 mins).

I am very proud of all the current crop of WEKs. They have had to show real dedication and hard work in order to get it together, and with one rehearsal to go, we are all confident of giving a great performance at all three events.

We hope that you will come long wherever you can to support all of their hard work, and we look forward to giving you all a good performance!
